The brief called for a small home on a small block with a small budget!
The response was to create an illusion of space by designing to the block boundaries with north facing courtyards, generous entry, varying ceiling heights, a two-way (defacto ensuite) bathroom and a sunken open planned living area which looks out over the adjoining wetland.
All living areas face north and the second bedroom doubles as a studio space and opens onto a deck in the northern courtyard. The fully insulated burnished concrete slab retains winter heat and therefore the only supplementary heating is a small gas fireplace.
A high level of sustainability is also ensured by the provision of double glazed windows, water tanks, high level insulation and good cross ventilation throughout.
