The original brief was to provide additional car parking, celebrate the front door, screen the upper level balcony and create street appeal to a poorly extended 1970’s modernist flat roofed brick home on a challenging well treed site in a quiet Aranda cul-de-sac. All on a very tight budget!
The site is dominated by tall Manniferas gum trees which together with the home’s broad strong horizontal fascias provide the visual cues for the additional building elements. Only one of ten trees had to be removed to accommodate the widened carport.
The main design elements are:
1.Vertical screen of segmented powder coated aluminium battens
- Widened driveway with stone retaining wall
- Raised and extended carport with lantern structure
The existing building fabric has barely been affected by the new work hence reducing the environmental footprint. The metal screen was powder coated for durability and should never require re-paining.
The vertical screen continues to wrap horizontally around the upper level balcony, punctuated by glass and stainless steel balustrading, providing a sculptural form and adding privacy. The steely blue-grey colour of the screen was chosen to reflect the natural tones of the gum trees.
The new lantern structure and additional two double glazed skylights to the existing entry porch provide both enhanced natural light and opportunities for artificial lighting. The lantern structure pops out of and interrupts the long horizontal lines of the house and carport roofs.
A low curved wall of Canberra sandstone retains the garden from the widened driveway and leads the eye to the entry.
The fragmented sections of exposed aggregate coloured concrete are differentiated from the driveway surface, and sparing use of bold colour completes the composition.
The project cost of $116,472 represents terrific value for the clients. (We had also received tenders in the range of $150,000 and $180,000 which were well beyond our client’s budget).
The new work has considerably improved the street appeal of this property and aroused great interest in the neighbourhood.
